- With a cherry on top: While you've been busy pooh-pooh-ing Pinterest, users have made it as popular as Twitter. A new Pew study shows that Twitter attracts 16 percent of social network users, with Pinterest right behind at 15 percent. There's more demographic data on various network users in this meaty report.
- She got the way to move me, Cherry: Slow delivery dooms your video views, says this study: Each additional one minute of buffering time leads to three fewer minutes of viewing time. With optimal viewing, users will watch 250 times more video.
- Cherry blossoms: Reader Siobhan Gallagher at Tufts pulled together and shared this Google Doc with links to various science communications resources from the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting last weekend. Useful summary, and you are free to add to it.
- My, that tree looks shorter now: As you were warned right here in the weekend read some time ago, Twitter has chopped your tweets with links down to 118 characters, or 117 if your link is https. Really, you can handle this.
- Chopped: Twitter is shutting down one of my favorite blogging sites, Posterous. Time to migrate those blogs. Posthaven has popped up to convert your Posterous blog--but you'll pay for that. A free option for converting a Posterous blog to Tumblr is JustMigrate. Greg Tracy offers a workaround to convert Posterous blogs to Blogger via Wordpress. If you like a big project, you can hack your way through Lifehacker's workaround. Or, if you're lucky like me, a whip-smart, generous, kind, thoughtful, selfless person (who really should be paid millions*) will volunteer to do all that tinkering for you, without your even having to ask. Unlike George Washington, I am not worthy, but I am grateful. This concludes the groveling by Graveline.
- Hug that tree: Some cancer patients are using Tumblr to share their stories and seek support.
- The father of our rankings: Copyblogger looks at how Google's PageRank algorithm used to screw the online author, and how that got fixed in your favor. Includes tips on how to blog with search-engine-worthy authority.
- Not the father of our tweets: USA TODAY shared this chart on CEO participation in social media. Low percentages, but it turns out Facebook wins with 10 percent of CEOs participating there. Don't forward this to the front office, kids.
- Cherry ice: You can back up your data, pictures, videos for less than $10 a year on Amazon Glacier.
- Can she bake a cherry pie? How about an Android version? Yes, Twitter's Vine video app is looking for an Android developer, but don't hold your breath.
- What was that thing about not lying? From the Department of Duh, following some high-profile real hacks of Twitter accounts, MTV and BET hacked their own accounts. Not a George Washington moment.
Where to catch me next: On March 6, I'm speaking in New York City on Pinterest for communicating science, at a joint meeting of the Science Writers in New York and the American Society of Journalists and Authors. It's free to members of those groups, or $10 for non-members. Pinterest was just valued at $2.5 billion, and occupies nearly as large a proportion of social users as Twitter, so yes, it's worth taking seriously. I think you'll be surprised by the examples we'll be sharing. Register here. I'd love to see some weekend readers in the audience.
Future president--or just your next job? RESULTS Educational Fund is looking for a communications officer...Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is hiring a senior science writer....the American Trucking Associations wants a manager, communications and multimedia...the Saginaw Community Foundation needs a marketing and communications officer...the UK's Society for Applied Microbiology seeks a communications manager for a 12-month period.
Can't lie about this, either: I'm glad you're ending the week right here. Have a restful, fun weekend!
