But this holiday season, I'm mostly recommending style guides that reflect the shorter styles and formats involved in social media. Here are a few you might want to use to reward that hard-working writer down the hall (or the one behind your desk):
- The Yahoo! Style Guide: The Ultimate Sourcebook for Writing, Editing and Creating Content for the Digital World - a comprehensive desk reference for online content and writing.
- 140 Characters: A Style Guide for the Short Form that hones in on improving your tweets.
- The Twitter Book, not a style guide per se, but shows actual tweets that illustrate different content needs on Twitter. Loads of examples, including one from me (see page 146).
- Associated Press 2010 Stylebook
-- updated annually, but this is the first version to make "website" one word. Just in time for the 21st century....oh, snap! Also for the first time, includes a special section on social media.
